The PhD defense is an important step in obtaining a doctoral degree.

The defense includes the PhD research paper, which amounts to 60% of the final grade, and the oral presentation of the student's research, which amounts to 10% of the final grade.

The defense is an important step in obtaining a PhD degree. It is organized at the end of the third year of the PhD to enable the student to present his/her research, findings and contributions to his/her field of study to a panel of experienced and competent judges.

The defense usually takes the form of an oral presentation followed by a discussion with the jury and questions from the audience. During the defense, the student must answer all questions and justify their answers with their research methodology and conclusions.

A PhD defense is a prerequisite for the validation of the research conducted by the student researcher and the awarding of the PhD degree.

Derogation

A derogation from the PhD presentation is an exceptional request to obtain the student-researcher's diploma without having to go through the oral presentation before the jury.

This waiver may be granted in special situations, such as in the case of a student with a serious illness or disability that would prevent them from taking part in a presentation in person.

Exemption from the presentation may also be granted in cases where the student-researcher has already published the results of his or her research in internationally renowned scientific journals.

In this case, the student-researcher can justify that the results of his/her research have been sufficiently reviewed by the scientific community and that there is no need for a presentation.

However, it is important to note that waiving the PhD presentation remains an exceptional measure and that HEIRC strictly evaluates this waiver procedure in order to guarantee the academic integrity of the PhD degree.

The PhD program features a sophisticated academic methodology that emphasizes engagement and communication between students and professors, through:
