The PhD defense serves as a critical hurdle in a doctoral candidate's journey towards earning their degree. It's a comprehensive evaluation of their research and their ability to communicate it effectively.

The defense typically takes place at the conclusion of the third year and is comprised of two key components:

The PhD Dissertation (60% of final grade): This is a comprehensive written document that details the student's research project, including its objectives, methodology, findings, and conclusions.

Oral Presentation and Defense (10% of final grade): The student delivers a concise presentation summarizing their research, followed by a discussion with a specialized jury. Here, the student is expected to answer questions about their methodology, results, and conclusions, demonstrating a deep understanding of their field.

The jury plays a vital role in assessing the overall quality of the doctoral work. They evaluate the clarity and accuracy of the written dissertation, as well as the student's ability to effectively present and defend their research during the oral examination. This discussion provides valuable insight into the student's research capabilities and their grasp of the subject matter.

Ultimately, a successful PhD defense signifies the successful culmination of the student's research journey and earns them the coveted PhD diploma.

A derogation from the PhD defense is an exceptional request to obtain the student-researcher's diploma without having to go through the oral defense before the jury.

This derogation may be granted in special situations, such as in the case of a student suffering from a serious illness or disability that would prevent him or her from taking part in a defense in person. A derogation may also be granted in cases where the student-researcher has already published the results of his/her research in internationally-renowned scientific journals.

In such cases, the student-researcher can justify that the results of his or her research have been sufficiently reviewed by the scientific community and that there is no need to proceed with a defense.

However, it is important to note that the waiver of the PhD defense remains an exceptional measure and that HEIRC strictly evaluates this waiver procedure in order to guarantee the academic integrity of the PhD degree.
